Our process - The user experience design disciplines are the "what", our process is the "how" and the "when".

We need to link all the UxD disciplines together, using them at the right times.

The UxD process guides us, helping us to arrive at a solution that works for everyone.

The central idea behind this process is to build something quickly, even if it is rough, test it with users as soon as possible and then refine it.

Because we test along the way, we can be confident that our design will work the way the users expect it to, and that it delivers what you need it to.

With each iteration of the design, the deliverables get more refined. We could start with something as simple as a sketch on a whiteboard and then refine that until we have a working prototype.

Along the way we deliver what are called design artefacts, you are probably familiar with some of them. Things like personas, wireframes, mock-ups, prototypes and minimum viable products (MVPs).

Over the years, the User Experience Design community has built some really great tools and processes to help us build things to show users.

We are discovering new skills and techniques all the time that help us design better software.

There are some great tools for creating wireframes, prototypes and minimum viable products. These allow us to test our direction of thinking with users.

We also use a range of different user testing methods. Different testing works well at different times in the process. Some of our testing methods include contextual enquiry (Observing users in their environment), moderated one-on-one testing or unmoderated remote testing for simple usability questions.

Naturally, there is a tension between your business needs, the users' needs, and what is technically possible. All the different stakeholders in the product or project team have different things that are important to them.

In our experience, there is one main way that websites, apps and especially business software miss expectations.

Bright idea

You have a brilliant idea for an application or website. It’s going to solve that huge problem that people have. The world will never be the same. You will be rich and people will invite you to parties.

You find some developers to build the app. This is usually done with a list of features. “The app needs to be able to...” They nod a lot. You are making progress. Champagne for everyone!
